History

Mission Statement

In the spring of 1994, eleven men at Binghamton University believed that Asian representation was not as strong as it should be. They felt the need to form an organization that would represent Asian in a more positive way. An organization that would help breakdown the negative stereotypes associated with Asian by educating themselves and others of their heritage and culture. They envisioned a brotherhood in which this could be achieved. Struggling together, these eleven men built the foundation of the Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc. Today, we the brothers of Pi Delta Psi, from different nationalities and backgrounds, continue their struggle & vision to further empower and unify the Asian community. However, many obstacles still prevent our goal from becoming a reality. Only through brotherhood and education, can we perservere together to work for a new and better tomorrow.

With chapters and colonies at Binghamton University, Buffalo University, Hofstra University, SUNY at Stony Brook, New York University, SUNY at Albany, RPI, Rochester University, Cornell University, and Rutgers University we strive to bring our goals and values to where ever we may exist.

A Stony Brook Tale

May 17, 1997

In the dark of night, four young and virile men awoke to a shining light. What awaited these four young souls at the end of the light remained unclear. Unfocused and confused, they took the initiative to walk this dark and narrow path in search of the answer.

While on their journey through this path, each man struggled through many obstacles. Such obstacles would have intimidated the average man, but these men felt that they were chosen for a higher calling. So they continued on this mission, aiding each other through their individual struggles.

After a long and arduous journey, the light that had been so unclear to these four young men in the beginning came into perspective. The answer that came to them was a sense of brotherhood, respect, pride and a bond to further strengthen the Asian race. Ultimately, the answer was Pi Delta Psi.

To all that remain bewildered to the light, the Brothers of Pi Delta Psi extend their hand in brotherhood and friendship.

This is "THE DAWNING OF A NEW ERA!" .....

Pi Delta Psi (Ten Years Strong)

On February 20, 1994, the first brothers of Pi Delta Psi were initiated. In the four years since our existence we have 150 brothers that has gone through the same process. I am sure that over the next four years we will exponentially grow from the current numbers.

As we start off our forth year I would like to remind and foster the principles of why Pi Delta Psi was founded, and as well as, dispel some of the misconceptions. This fraternity was founded on the basis to improve oneself, to be prepared mentally, physically and at times spiritually for the world. Through this fraternity we try to teach and share experiences in every aspect of our life. I am pleased to say since this fraternity comprises of so many ethnicity, heritage, beliefs and social background we have gathered a unique melting pot. In this melting pot we try to extract the positive from each other and apply it to our life. Life is a series of trials and tribulations. We learn when we try and we learn more when we fail. The more we try and the more we fail the more we understand the game of life. This fraternity creates opportunities for brothers to succeed in life. Every time we attempt to create a workshop or provide a helping hand at a philanthropic event we have taken the extra step that someone else has not. As you progress through college and thereafter, you look back and count all those extra steps that you have taken; all those opportunities you have not wasted, you will realize that you are a better person because you made the attempt.

As I stated earlier, this fraternity provides an environment for learning. When we throw a workshop, a party, a fundraiser or hold a position, we are empowering ourselves. We are teaching and at the same time learning from what we doing. As we learn, we are in the position to implement changes. In the past several years we made numerous contributions to the community. Through the works of 3 chapters and 4 colonies we accumulated over a dozen workshops covering various topics as well as participating at other organizations' workshops and philanthropy events. We have opened our eyes and mind to what the world has to offer. As each of you have taken the oath to pledge this fraternity, the brothers before you have taken the oath to educate you.

This fraternity first serves the brothers and pledges prior to serving the public. We are here for the betterment of the brothers and pledges before the world. Since the existence of this fraternity, we have received much criticism. Some say that we do not do enough for the community some criticize our depth and understanding of running workshops. We should listen to criticism, and if feasible take them into consideration. Though we will not succumb to their lack of understanding and bigotry remarks on the fraternity and the Greek system. Serving the public through workshops and community service is solely a voluntary event. We should be commend and not be retaliated for these deeds. As we are still young, we will continue to make many mistakes. We learn from these mistakes and move on. Those who support us will continue to lend a helping hand. Those who constantly criticize us will always try to break our bond.

The fraternity is not an academy of great scientists and professors. This fraternity comprises of ordinary individuals trying to make a change. There are no books, maps or compass to direct us in the right path. We as brothers have traveled through unforeseen territories to be where we are today. Nobody can take this away from us. Over the four years this fraternity has succeeded in many ways. For some brothers this fraternity is their first family, to provide support and direction, for some brothers a means to learn more about their heritage and for others a mechanism to a successful life or career. Whatever the circumstances each of us has for pledging the fraternity, we are all responsible for building the success and growth of this fraternity. As we look towards the future, let us not forget to continue to serve the fraternity. Do not let this legacy wither up and die. Do not forget to share what you've learn to others after you. Continue to strive on the foundations of righteousness, knowledge, brotherhood and heritage. It is through these four foundations that create a bond that unites us all. To all the Pi Delta Psi brothers, do not forget the reasons why this fraternity exists. When you wear your letters you are representing a dream and a legacy. Let us continue our road to success.
